REQUIREMENTS FOR PRINT PUBLICATIONS

Well known print publications require a lot more than digital magazines in order to feature interior designers projects. Here are some topics to focus on to be sure you’re putting yourself in the best position to get published.

Exclusivity - Magazines don’t want you to post pics on your social media or website prior to the publication of the project. They want to be the first to come out with the images so hold off on sharing until your article comes out.

Homeowner involvement - Most publications like to name the homeowner or interview them for the piece, even photograph them if possible in some situations. So be sure your homeowner is onboard before you put a project forward.

Whole house projects - Almost all magazines like full home features to include all the major rooms in a home. Some even require an exterior shot.

Unique stories behind the design - They want to tell a story and need a unique and personal angle to make that project stand out and attract readers. What makes your project distinctive? Is there a history, a homeowner story, a key piece or focal point that brought it all together?

Artful, unique projects - Dramatic design that makes a statement is always good.

Tailored projects - A minimalist modern box type structure probably won’t go over well for Traditional Home magazine. Be sure the project you’re proposing fits the theme of the publication.

Exclusive pitch - Magazines at this level don’t want you to pitch to other design magazines at the same time, they want to be allowed to consider without competition or a deadline for them to make a decision. But they do respect that after a few weeks or so, you might go elsewhere so it’s about being patient.
